NCAIE Annual State Conference

The 2012 North Carolina Association of International Educators Annual State Conference will take place at the University of North Carolina Charlotte on Thursday afternoon March 8th and Friday March 9th 2012.

This year we will offer 3 pre-conference workshops on Thursday afternoon March 8th. The cost is $35 per workshop. Please see below for workshop details.

Conference Details: Friday, March 9th 2012
9:30am – 4:30pm NCAIE State Conference
(4 sessions of workshops, Lunch & Business meeting)
8:30am – On Site Registration Begins
8:30am – Continental Breakfast begins

Airport Trip
As part of the NCAIE state conference, we will offer a special trip to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Witness firsthand how U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processes international visitors while we tour the facility and meet with CBP reps. Transportation will be provided. Registration is required.

Date:          Thursday, March 8, 2012 (day of pre-conference workshops)
Time:          Vans will depart UNCC promptly at 10:30 am and return by 1:00 pm.
Cost:          Free!

Parking at UNC Charlotte: Thursday March 8th & Friday March 9th
Great News - Parking in student RESIDENT/COMMUTER lots at UNC Charlotte is free for conference attendees. Please be aware that if you park in a VISITOR section, you will be charged the day rate for parking and we will not be able to void your ticket.

Parking LOT 19 and the lower levels of the UNION DECK (the student section NOT the visitor section) are recommended. If someone in your party has a mobility issue, then please park in the UNION DECK, take the elevator to the top floor and use the elevated walkway to enter the Student Union. NCAIE Pre-Conference & Conference workshop will be held in Building 63: College of Health & Human Services. This building is directly across the street from the front of the Student Union.

Conference Presenter
Are you presenting at the conference? If yes, the Conference Registration Fee (for up to two Presenters per session) will be waived. If your proposal is approved, you still must submit a registration form to Stacy Holliday.

Cancellations and Refunds.
Cancellation Notices must be received prior to March 1st 2012 for a refund. No-Shows will not be refunded.
If your registration and payment cannot be postmarked by February 27th, then please submit the late/on-site registration fee.
If you are not a conference presenter, payment is required to attend the conference.

2pm – 6pm F-1 Beginners Workshop (International Student & Scholar Services: Immigration)
This workshop is designed for those new to the field of immigration advising, campuses with a small number of international students, or as a refresher course. The workshop will cover the following topics: DSOs and their role at an institution, immigration documents and visa types, issuing I-20s, record keeping requirements, maintaining status, changing status, reinstatements, school transfers, and resources.

2:30pm – 5:30pm Credential Evaluations for Beginners (Recruitment, Admissions & Preparation)
Are you considering preparation of foreign transfer credential evaluations at your institution? This informative workshop will discuss the pros and cons of doing evaluations in-house; Comparisons of systems of education; The major types of higher education systems in the world; Grading scales; Authenticity of transcripts and Resources to use. We will include examples of transcripts from various countries in the world as well as practice preparing your own evaluations.

2:30pm – 5:30pm Risk Management (Education Abroad)
As world events have a way of demonstrating, we never know when or where our students abroad may be subjected to a large-scale crisis that requires action and resolve on behalf of their home institution to address student safety and university liability. This workshop will focus on key areas that study abroad practitioners must address in order to be effective advocates for our students and institutions in the event of such crises. We will begin with a presentation covering various aspects of crisis preparation and response and then leave time for an interactive discussion amongst the group about the topic presented. Any front-line education abroad practitioners and SIOs are encouraged to attend.


There will be a Pre-Conference Reception with drinks & hors d'ouevres hosted by the International Programs Office of UNC-Charlotte from 6pm – 7pm on Thursday March 8th. Please indicate on your registration form if you plan to attend this reception so we can plan accordingly. Reception will be held at the International Programs Office.

Preference given to applicants from Community Colleges, Historically Black College and Universities and individuals who are self-funded. Applicants must be working or living in North Carolina. The Martha Fitch Trigonis Individual Award. This award is presented to an individual who has shown remarkable excellence in the field of international education. Those who have received the award in the past have made contributions at the state, regional, and even at the national level. They have served unselfishly, always working to further the mission of NCAIE here and elsewhere.

Institutional Award. This award is presented to an institution whose international programming is exemplary and outstanding. The institution's program should be not only excellent but also unique.

Volunteer Award. The Outstanding Volunteer Award is for the person(s) who have made significant contribution as community volunteer(s) who are committed to internationalism at a local academic institution.
